This dynamic workshop presents cornerstone principles of Ericksonian strategic psychotherapy. Milton H. Erickson, M.D. (1901-1980), was renowned for his ingenious methods for eliciting patient change. His approach harnessed the power of hypnosis, but often without the use of formal trance. These brief therapy techniques, such as symptom prescription, reframing, anecdotes and symbols, can be incorporated into any psychotherapeutic discipline and across patient populations to enhance the therapeutic process. Key concepts include goal-setting, gift-wrapping, tailoring, creating a dramatic process and utilization. Applications to problems such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders and trauma are addressed.
Educational Objectives:
- To distinguish five “choice points” that can be used to empower therapy
- Given a treatment goal, to distill ways to gift-wrap, tailor, and process the intervention.

Erickson Foundation, He has edited, co-edited, authored or coauthored more than 20 books on psychotherapy that appear in twelve foreign languages.Dr. Zeig is the architect of The Evolution of Psychotherapy Conferences, the Brief Therapy Conferences, the Couples Conferences, and the International Congresses on Ericksonian Approaches to Hypnosis and Psychotherapy.A psychologist and marriage and family therapist in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Zeig conducts workshops internationally (more than 40 countries). In this pre-congress workshop Bernhard Trenkle and Ernil Hansen will introduce Medical Hypnosis. Best evidence for efficacy of hypnotherapy exists in the indication with medical treatment. First Bernhard Trenkle will give an overview about possibilities and fields of application of medical hypnosis: Chronic and acute pain, treating special symptoms like CRPS, endometriosis, migraine, neurological rehabilitation after polio, stroke, brain surgery or MS, etc, influencing blood pressure, tinnitus, hypnosis for delivering babies or treating infertility, allergies, psycho-oncology, post-covid problems, etc.
A special feature exists for acute medical situations like emergencies, surgery, dental interventions or intensive care. The experience as an extreme challenge leads patients into a natural trance state as an emergency reaction, so they are not dependent on a formal hypnosis induction. Therefore, both hypnotherapy and hypnotic communication have been very successfully used to accompany and support medical treatment.
Ernil Hansen will speak about experiences with therapeutic hypnotic communication in emergencies, with patients undergoing awake craniotomies, and with intraoperative suggestions during general anesthesia. With the latter, pre- and postoperative hypnotic interventions are completed to a consistent concept for care of surgical patients, addressing prophylaxis, treatment and influencing of symptoms and adverse effects even at the time of their origin.
Principles and clinical examples of hypnotic interventions in medicine are presented (including video clips), discussed and experienced in some exercises.

Hypnosis is the oldest healing method. The ability to experience and give hypnosis is inherent in us. Its foundations are the ability to concentrate, imagination, powers of observation, empathy and fantasy.
Every dentist and every member of staff has their own individual talent for guiding and calming patients. The technique of suggestive communication utilizes existing strategies and builds on them. (Non)verbal communication is constantly taking place on the (un)conscious level. Indirect hypnosis techniques can be used to control this communication in a targeted manner. Compliance and employee motivation improve. Anxiety and stress reduction can be achieved with little effort using modern hypnosis techniques. Self-hypnosis enables rapid regeneration and better concentration. Hypnosis creates the conditions for successful dental therapy for psychosomatic illnesses. Hypnosis is help for self-help by tapping into unconscious resources. Hypnosis is not only the way to work in a relaxed manner and to solve problems, it also helps to make everyday life in every practice more effective and satisfying.
Over the last 40 years, hypnosis has proven itself in many practices as an indispensable component of modern dentistry that is integrated into all treatment procedures. Our goal is not the patient without a will, but the self-determined, safe and anxiety-free patient. Patients who are treated with modern hypnosis remain loyal to the practice due to their positive experience and are happy to return.
The use of hypnosis begins in everyday communication, right from the patient's first call to the practice. The staff trained in hypnosis and suggestive communication use communication in a targeted manner to establish compliance, reduce anxiety and talk through planned treatment procedures in advance in order to initiate readiness for relaxed dental treatment.
The experience of everyday use in more and more practices has brought new possibilities and techniques of hypnosis. The increasing number of practices with systematic hypnosis training and intensive exchange between practitioners has resulted in practical relevance and efficiency, while at the same time reducing prejudices against hypnosis. In particular, the use of the whole team makes work easier for patients, practitioners and the practice. This workshop will teach you how to use hypnosis quickly and easily in practice.Hypnosis helps heal, prevents stress and facilitates anxiety reduction and pain control.
