Abstract:

“Is it ok to weep?” is a question that arises regularly in the supervision of professional caregivers.  Taking care of those who suffer is not only a question of professional training but touches the caregiver also on the personal level. To be able to cope with one’s own emotional reactions to suffering can be a challenge. Taking care of oneself and protecting one’s personal space is important to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout.

This presentation will focus on protection techniques for individuals and teams.  How can we use healthy rituals to separate between professional and personal life? How can we use (self-) hypnosis to strengthen personal balance?

Christiane Steffens-Dhaussy is a German psychologist and psychotherapist specialized in palliative care and grief therapy, she is a trainer for hypnosis, a supervisor for palliative care teams and the author of a book on supporting patients, family and professionals confronted to situations of death and grief in the hospital setting.  www.re-sourcen.eu
